Florence "Flossie" Kling DeWolfe and Warren Harding married on July 8, 1891 in Marion, Ohio. Mrs. DeWolfe was the daughter of a local banker. She attended the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Her previous marriage ended in divorce.
Mrs. DeWolfe met Warren Harding in 1890. Her father objected to the courtship. (The Harding family was rumored to have "Negro" blood.) But Florence DeWolfe insisted on the marriage. At the time, Harding owned the Marion Star. The new Mrs. Harding went to work for the newspaper. She was an excellent executive. She helped build the newspaper into a successful business.
As first lady, Florence Harding planned dinners, parties, and receptions. Her garden parties were famous among Washington insiders. She was also apparently a believer in astrology. Mrs. Harding was said to have visited Madame Marcia, Washington's best known astrologer. After her husband died in 1923, Mrs. Harding returned to Ohio. She remained there until her own death in 1924. Florence and Warren Harding are buried at the Harding Memorial in Marion, Ohio.
Warren Harding's Children :
Warren and Florence Harding had no children. Mrs. Harding had one son from a previous marriage. He died at an early age. Warren Harding may have had an illegitimate child. Her name was Elizabeth Ann Christian. (See The Nan Britton Affair.)
